Kill #4: American Psycho - Chainsaw Drop
The first on-screen penis I ever set eyes on was Ewan Mcgregor’s in Pillow Talk. The first horror movie penis I ever witnessed was Christian Bale’s in American Psycho. I’m not sure how relevant that is to the rest of this post, but I found it worth mentioning because, well, penis.
After realizing that Patrick Bateman has just murdered her colleague, Christie flees from his apartment, attempting to escape. This beautifully shot scene employs the same bold reds and whites that are present in the cinematography of the rest of the film; its colors provide a psychedelic and surreal effect to the overhead shots of the staircase. The way Patrick traces her body with his chainsaw is so precise - it almost looks as though he is controlling her movements, a sort of demented puppetmaster. I also love the simple length of the shots in this scene; no quick jump cuts, but long tracking and zooming immerses the audience in the action of what I believe to be one of the greatest on-foot chase scenes in horror cinema.
